Transcribed from Case: [Benjamin] "was a lieutenant under his brother Daniel at the Siege of Quebec; was wounded by a gun-shot in the left breast, and when only partially healed returned to the service again with his company; the wound soon after broke out afresh, and he was ultimately discharged and left for home; he only reached Stone Arabia, N.Y., where he died."²

     Transcribed from Case: "Nothing is known of him farther than that he joined the Shakers, about 1785, where he remained until his death; it is not known whether his wife joined with him or not, but it is quite certain that his children did."²

     Note: This last statement is contradicted by the fact that Case has Nathan's oldest son Nathan married and had fourteen children. If these children are "attached" to the proper father then he certainly was not a Shaker. The Shakers practiced celibacy.³

Ezekiel Goodrich¹ (M)

     Ezekiel Goodrich was born on 13 August 1749.² He resided at Hancock, Massachusetts.² He was the son of Benjamin Goodrich and Hannah Olmsted.¹ He married Eunice Rathbone, daughter of Rev. Valentine Rathbone, on 23 December 1760.² He died on 16 April 1783 at age 33.²

     Transcribed from Case: "he, with his family, joined the Shakers about 1770, where he died suddenly after a few years, leaving his family; his widow died among them, and, so far as known, all the children did, save Ezekiel Olmsted, who ran away from them at the age of 16 and found shelter and protection among his mother's relatives."²

     Note: I have several problems with the data put forth by Case on this family. Firstly, he married at the age of 11 and was having children at the age of 12?! I do not believe this at all and here are my reasons:
When I get the entry for his son Ezekiel Olmsted Goodrich in the database at a later time, you will see that on that entry, Case has his birth date as 1 Oct 1773. On this page with his siblings it is listed as 1 Oct 1763.
     I have a feeling that Case made a mistake in editing and every date on page 79 and 80 (for this family) are off exactly 10 years. A typo if you will. That would be much more believable and it would also be consistent with the statement by Case that "he died suddenly after a few years".
     So my hypothesis is that the marriage date should be 23 Dec 1770, Eunice T. was born 9 Oct 1771, Elizur born 1 Oct 1775, Valentine born 13 Sep 1777, and Joshua born 7 Apr 1780. The family then joined the Shakers in 1780 not 1770. This is also consistent with my understanding that the first Shakers led by Ann Lee did not come to America until 1774. If the Shakers didn't exist in America until 1774, it would be difficult for Ezekiel and his family to have joined them in 1770.
     If anyone has any information that would help clear this up, we would love to hear from you.³

     Transcribed from Case: [Elizur] "was for a few years a prosperous merchant at Pittsfield, Mass., for nearly or quite ten years; disposing of his mercantile interests at Pittsfield in 1787, both he and his wife joined the Shakers at New Lebanon, among whom he became a riding minister, and in the year 1818 his wife was called the mother of all their chuches. No record has been found of any children."²

     Note: Please take notice of the discrepancy in the above statement. The quote from Case implies that Elizur and his wife joined the Shakers in 1787, yet their marriage date is given as 1799.³
