     Transcribed from Case: "began the study of medicine with Dr. Francis Carey, in 1828, with whom he continued three years; studied two years with Dr. William Copeland of Carbondale, Penn., and two more years with Dr. Henry J. Ostrom, at Sodus, N.Y; graduated at the Geneva Medical College, Geneva, N.Y., in 1838, taking the first prize in surgery and the second in medicine; commenced practice in Dundaff, Penn., and East Newark, N.Y., until 1858, when he removed to Delavan, Wis; in 1861, commissioned surgeon in the army."2
