     Transcribed from Case: "at the age of twelve years began work with his father in his store in Lockport, N.Y., where he continued for twenty years; had the entire charge and management of the store for ten years; left for Milwaukee, Wis., in 1846, and engaged in the fruit business with a capital of about $100, which in six months was increased to $700; continued in the business eighteen years; sold out and went to Chicago, and engaged in the fruit-commission business; in 1866, purchased a fruit farm in Cobden, Union Co., Ill. Having no church organization in the town, a regular prayer-meeting was established in his house; as a result, in about two years the First Congregational Church of Cobden was organized; after about eight years he became the principal agent in the organization of a second church, known as the Union Congregational Church of Cobden, with fifteen members, which, after a lapse of about eight months, was increased to one hundred and fifteen, a flourishing Sabbath-school, house of worship with seating for four hundred, paid for, and a settled pastor."²
